Philip Bonanno, 44, of St Paul's Bay was given a suspended sentence today for slightly injuring Juan Mula Debono and Emanuel Mula in a punch-up over a parking slot on January 21, 2006.

The court heard how Juan Mula Debono had been waiting in the parking lot of Natu self-service. As he was about to drive into a parking spot, another car reversed at speed to take the same parking space. The cars collided and an argument ensued.

The court found that the accused had punched Juan Mula Debono, smashing his glasses in his face and injuring him. He also slightly injured Emanuel Mula.

The court said that while there was evidence that the accused had been defending himself and had not struck the first blow, he had exceeded the limits of legitimate defence.

In view of the provocation and the fact that the accused otherwise had no police record, the court condemned him to seven months imprisonment suspended for two years and a fine of €58.
