The Tecnifibre PAR-11 Open, at the Marsa Sports Club last weekend, attracted an entry of 36 players. They were grouped in three categories.

The Open was the first in Malta to be held using the new ESF PAR-11 scoring format.

In the mixed 'A' event, Mark Lupi, the top seed, progressed smoothly to the KO stages but had to show his expertise in the semi-final to oust Joanna Rizzo.

Martin Mallia reached the final after an entertaining match against Theresa Brousson. He tried his best to upset the no.1 seed but Lupi's aggressive style of play prevailed.

The mixed 'B' competition was won by Charles Mifsud. In the final, he beat Sandro Zammit who confirmed his current fine form in league competition with yet another fine all-round display.

The mixed 'C' event saw two newcomers, Kate Borg and Patrick Abela, reaching the final.

This category also provided the chance for some youngsters to gain valuable experience using PAR-11.

In the final, Borg edged out Abela in three games.
