Ambassador Sergio Piazzi, the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, has expressed his condolences on the death of Dom Mintoff to Speaker Michael Frendo.
“Mr Mintoff’s vision, role and determination in promoting peace, security and stability in the Mediterranean as a sine qua non for the achievement of the same values throughout Europe have been instrumental and a guiding light for decades since the historical Helsinki Final Act.
“He will long be remembered by the emerging nations of the region for his significant contribution to instil a sense of pride, identity and self-determination among even the smallest of populations of the Mediterranean basin.
“We are confident that the legacy of his statesmanship will not be forgotten and Mr Mintoff will be remembered as one of the pillars of modern Malta, which, following on his footsteps, has become an active and leading actor in the Mediterranean,” he wrote.
