Naxxar residents have raised the alarm over fireworks being let off from Palazzo Parisio during events held there, concerned they could be in danger if sparks are carried by the wind to nearby houses.

A spokesman for the venue confirmed that a number of residents had been complaining about the fireworks. He insisted, however, there was no cause for alarm because all police regulations were being observed.

“We obtain all the necessary permits from the police and follow all the guidelines they issue,” the spokesman said.

He insisted the police would not issue permits unless all the safety criteria were met. When asked what such criteria consisted of, the spokesman said a fire engine would be standing by outside the venue.

According to the spokesman, both aerial and ground fireworks displays were organised. Footage seen by this newspaper showed one such display went on for close to a minute.

Asked about the residents’ concerns, the spokesman said that, while the venue took note of all complaints made, it planned to continue setting off fireworks during events, stressing that regulations set by the police were followed.

Similar sentiments were echoed by the Naxxar local council, though it was specified that permits for the launching of fireworks did not fall within its remit because it was the police that handled such matter. The council is only responsible for the issuing of a “no objection letter”, which is done as long as there is a police permit.

“Once there are police permits, we find no objection. On our end, as long as the police give their go ahead, we do not object to the permits being issued,” council secretary Paul Gatt told this newspaper.

As for complaints by the residents, he said that, while the council had not received any such complaints, anyone with concerns should approach the council. He reiterated that it was the police who decided on whether or not to grant permits.

“You also need to keep in mind that these are not the sort of fireworks used in feasts and, yet, aren’t fireworks let off during feasts? Why is it that these [at Palazzo Parisio] are deemed unsafe and those at the feasts are not,” Mr Gatt asked.
