The government will be introducing a door-to-door collection scheme for separated recyclable packaging waste in all localities from April 1, Environment Minister George Pullicino has announced.

The new scheme is intended to complement, not replace, the function of the some 200 bring-in sites spread over Malta and Gozo.

Mr Pullicino was speaking during the BOV Environment Seminar held last week at the San Gorg Corinthia Hotel in St Julians.

The seminar, which tackled waste management and its implications for Maltese industry and society, attracted over 100 delegates representing a cross-section of organisations within the industry. It was organised in conjunction with the Malta Business Bureau.

A number of different topics related to waste management were presented to the audience by a distinguished panel of local and international speakers. The issues discussed included producers' responsibility, with a focus on the obligations of producers to register with the competent authorities, as well as the setting up of systems for collection and recycling of waste.
