The owners of an illegal kiosk removed last week after having been a permanent fixture on The Strand, Gżira since 1987 insisted yesterday they had always been in possession of a valid licence.

Taking their claim to court, Manwel and Doris Spiteri said they have been left without an income since their business ceased as a result of enforcement action by the Government Property Division.

In an official letter filed yesterday, the couple also claimed that, because they are in possession of a valid licence, which is recognised by the social security system, they have been denied social assistance.

The couple said they are calling on the Director of Land and the Director of Social Security to provide them with either a new kiosk or an alternative site.

They are also seeking damages due to the loss of revenue and the loss of social assistance.
