I am a Maltese citizen who is currently living abroad. I often come to visit my family in Malta together with my husband. As we don't own a car here in Malta we decided to rent one from a Website and pick it up as soon as we got to the airport.

We rented the car as per the rates posted on the Website, but before we could take the car we were told that we had to pay for the half tank of petrol that was already in the car and then bring the car back empty.

The person in charge said we had to pay €36 for half a tank of petrol! We thought that was too much and so we asked if we could instead bring the car back with the tank half-full. The person in charge did not accept and after we argued with him for 15 minutes, he agreed that €36 was too much but that he could not do anything about it as that was the company's policy. We had no choice but to pay otherwise we would have lost our deposit.

We were more disappointed when we found out that it wasn't even half a tank full and later on when we filled the tank half-way through it cost us only €12. I wonder how many tourists are overcharged everyday by this car rental company. We have rented cars throughout Europe and America but we never had this problem.
