More than 200 students will be spending the next few years immersed in research and postgraduate studies after receiving government scholarships worth €4.3m.

Running into its fourth year, the government scholarship scheme was attracting more people to take up post-graduate studies, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said last night.

Speaking during the award ceremony, Dr Gonzi handed scholarships to 228 people in the areas of science, medicine, health, commerce and IT.

Spending on education, research and innovation was an investment in human resources and in the country’s potential, Dr Gonzi said. This year the government would also be pumping about €21 million into stipends for 15,000 students.

One student who benefited from a scholarship in IT, Christian Colombo, spoke about his experience, which he described as “highly intensive”. He developed an internal monitoring system for computers, which later helped him find a job with the Malta Council for Science and Technology.
