Outgoing Speaker Michael Frendo has been nominated by the prime minister to serve on the Venice Commission - an independent think-tank within the Council of Europe which advises on democracy and constitutional matters.

Dr Muscat said Dr Frendo was well placed to serve on the commission in view of his experience as Speaker and former foreign minister.

Malta had to date been represented on the commission by former president Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, who asked not to be re-appointed.

Dr Muscat thanked him for his service.

Dr Frendo's term as Speaker ends on Saturday when the new Parliament is convened.

Dr Frendo this morning called on President George Abela on a courtesy call. Dr Abela praised Dr Frendo for the way he had performed his role in difficult circumstances.
