O Seven times Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong will make his marathon debut in the New York City race on November 5, New York Road Runners president Mary Wittenberg said. Armstrong, 34, set his record winning streak after he had been diagnosed with cancer and given less than a 50 per cent chance of survival.

O Cardiff will stage the first cricket test match to be played in Wales during the 2009 Ashes series, the England and Wales Cricket Board said. Glamorgan's Sofia Gardens will take the place of Nottingham's Trent Bridge in the roster for cricket's oldest international fixture between England and Australia. The ground will be given a 7.4 million pound development in readiness.

O A Chinese sports official has ruled out a return to the national team for estranged Olympic diving champion Tian Liang. China's "diving prince" was kicked off the national squad in 2005 for taking part in too many commercial activities, despite having won a gold and a bronze at the Athens Games and the 10 metres platform title at the Sydney Olympics. Domestic media had speculated that Tian might be next in line for reconciliation after former NBA player Wang Zhizhi was welcomed back to China earlier in the month.

O Greek archaeologists have rejected plans to use the ancient stadium at Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games, for an international athletics meeting next month, claiming this would damage the historic site. The Central Archaeological Council unanimously vetoed a proposal backed by both the IOC and the IAAF. The event was seen as an opportunity to boost the image of athletics worldwide.
