China powered past defending champions South Korea 91-71 to win gold for the 10th time in the women's Asian basketball championship this week. China finished fourth in the Olympics at home last year. Japan overcame Taiwan 72-57 in the match for the third place for the bronze medal.

Boxing
Japan plans to reintroduce domestic heavyweight rankings after a gap of 51 years. The Japan Boxing Commission will give tests to 10 applicants, including kick boxers and mixed martial arts fighters hoping to join the professional ranks from late November.

Skiing
Double overall World Cup winner Bode Miller returned to the United States skiing team. Miller, who has spent his career challenging the ski racing establishment, displayed none of his usual rebelliousness as the US ski team welcomed back the man who walked away from them two years ago to start his own one-man team.

Winter Olympics
South Korea have formally submitted their bid for Pyeongchang to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. Pyeongchang narrowly failed in bids to host the 2010 and 2014 Winter Games but the South Korean Olympic Commitee is hoping for third time lucky. Munich and Annecy have also submitted bids.

Basketball, NBA
The New York Knicks have reached an agreement to retain power forward David Lee. Lee will sign a one-year contract worth $8 million that includes a $500,000 incentive clause for making the play-offs.

Athletics
Tyson Gay again had too much power for Asafa Powell when beating him over 100 metres in the Daegu International meeting yesterday. Gay coasted to his 21st sub-10 second performance when he repeated his victory in Shanghai last Sunday with a time of 9.94 seconds. The American established a 6-1 winning ratio ahead of Powell, the former world record holder, who clocked 10.00.
