Residents in five localities are to be encouraged to put their organic waste – mostly food – in ad hoc bags which will be collected twice a week.

Environment minister Leo Brincat said the pilot project will be launched in Birkirkara, Cospicua, Għaxaq, Ta’ Xbiex and Mdina in the next phase of the waste separation process.

The bags will be collected on Mondays and Fridays.

The project will be extended to another four localities in January . The trial period will take six months.

Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Buontempo who is responsible for local councils, said 60% of waste is estimated to be organic. This waste could be recycled for other use, such as to produce energy, rather than fill landfills.

The pilot project will be accompanied by an education campaign by Wastserv and the local councils.
