The Order of Malta (SMOM) has donated €200,000 to help the Malta Guide Dogs Foundation acquire and train a number of guide dogs for the visually impaired.

The Maltese Association of The Order of Malta will be managing the donation through a period of time in line with a jointly agreed programme.

Foreign Minister Tonio Borg took a personal interest in this venture and played an important part in its conclusion.

He expressed his gratitude to the Order and thanked the Malta Guide Dogs Foundation for its sterling work.

This new venture mirrors the Order of Malta's 900-year vocation and mission to help those in need of help. The Order operates in more than 120 countries. Its programmes include medical and social assistance, disaster relief, emergency services, first aid corps, help for the elderly, the handicapped and children in need, and support for refugees and internally displaced persons regardless of race, origin or religion.

The Order relies on the world-wide involvement of its 13,500 members, as well as approximately 80,000 trained volunteers and 25,000 employees, the majority of whom are medical personnel.
