The Opposition is requesting a debate in Parliament on the situation in the eurozone and its impact on Malta.

In a statement this morning, PL finance spokesman Karmenu Vella and economic affairs spokesman Charles Mangion noted that they had an informal meeting with the Minister of Finance last week, but they felt that this was a time for a comprehensive debate in Parliament.

In that way they said, taxpayers could be informed about decisions which were being taken, and the outlook for the future. The debate would also serve to clarify the position of the Maltese government on the use of public funds and guarantees by Malta.

The PL spokesman said they were calling for the debate, without a vote, to be held before the House rises for the summer recess.

Malta is currently lending money to Greece as part of the EU-IMF bailout, and has made guarantees to Ireland and Portugal. EU Finance Minister are currently discussing the rapidly deteriorating situation in Italy and Spain, amid fears that the crisis could spread to those economies.
