The Opposition has presented a motion in Parliament to annul legal notices which introduced the new water and electricity tariffs.

The motion says the way the new tariffs were introduced violated the EU Treaty and EU and national competition and fair trade rules. The tariffs also went against an EU Council recommendation on the enforcement of tariffs, which provided that tariffs had to respect market conditions, more so when providers enjoyed a monopoly.

The motion also complains of poor practices at Enemalta, including poor practices in oil purchases, inefficiency, and an accumulation of debt resulting from such inefficiency, and insists that such costs should not be shouldered by consumers.

Furtthermore the government had failed to produce a comprehensive energy plan, despite repeated calls for the Opposition for it to do so.
