The Opposition has called on the government to seriously address the traffic congestion problem and draw up an effective traffic management plan.

The call was made in a motion presented to the Speaker of the House of Representatives this evening.

The motion says traffic congestion increased drastically in the past two-and-a-half years, creating huge inconvenience to the public and harming the economy and the environment.

The situation had worsened despite a government election promise to launch a National Traffic Management Plan and bring about efficiency and infrastructural development.

As a result of the government's failure, the people were spending more time stuck in traffic and spending more on fuel for their cars. Businesses were suffering and workers were less productive. As a result the economy was less competitive.

The situation was leading to more air pollution and a greater incidence of road rage incidents.

The motion also calls for a wide debate on the current situation.
