Opposition leader Joseph Muscat this evening shouldered responsibility for the motion of no confidence in the government, moved by the Opposition this morning.

Speaking on Xarabank, Dr Muscat said that although the motion was signed by deputy leader Anglu Farrugia and whip Joe Mizzi, he solely shouldered responsibility for the decision.

The Opposition moved the motion, he said, because the Prime Minister was fleeing from taking the decisions the country needed.

And although it suited him better if the Nationalist Party kept fighting internally allowing the administration system to collapse, this was not in the country's best interest.

He said he shouldered responsibility for this decision and if the people trusted him with other decisions in future, he would also shoulder them responsibly.

Dr Muscat said he believed that a new government led by him would lead with the best cabinet possible and would be able to manage the country in a much better way than it was being administered right now.

This government, he said, has had to face crises throughout the three-and-a-half years of this legislature. Was the Prime Minister always correct?

"I believe the problem is the Prime Minister’s style of management," Dr Muscat said.

He said that had the Prime Minister called a vote of confidence last Friday, both sides could have met and agreed on a date for the debate and the issue would have been settled.

Asked whether the country could afford an election at this time, he said that the country could not afford instability.

Campaigns had already been launched and an election had to come at one point or another.

Should an election be held now, he said, the Labour Party would be facing it as the underdog, Dr Muscat said. This was because it had lost six of the last seven elections.
