The Opposition expects tomorrow’s Budget to include a clearly laid out traffic management plan, Simon Busuttil said this morning.

Speaking in an interview on Radio 101, Dr Busuttil said the Opposition was not saying the traffic problem came about in the past two-and-a-half years but the Labour government was meant to have had a roadmap to tackle it.

But rather than solving the problem, it allowed it to worsen.

“What the Opposition wants is a serious traffic management plan. We expect clearly laid-out solutions… The main reason as to why the problem has continued to worsen is that the minister is incompetent. He is absolutely not up to it… Two-and-a-half years have been wasted and the government has not come up with any measures at all,” Dr Busuttil said.

He noted that a proposal he made last year for the government to foot the bill for the transport of children attending private and independent schools had been ridiculed at the time but it was now being considered.

Dr Busuttil noted that the traffic problem was leading to fuel wastage.

He said since the price of oil had consistently gone down, the Opposition was expecting fuel and electricity prices to also go down.

Dr Busuttil said the Opposition was expecting tomorrow's Budget to fairly spread the wealth being created.

Although the economy had continued to grow, the government was closing its eyes to the scandals taking place.

While wealth was being created, Dr Busuttil said, it was not being distributed fairly.

He noted there were 100,000 people living in poverty and the number of elderly in this position had increased by 2,500 in just one year.

Moreover, while under the previous administration wages used to increase by €500 a year, under this government they were only increasing by an average of €200 year.

What he promised us before the election was bluff and deceit

“Our call is clear, distribute economic wealth fairly among all,” he said.

He noted, however, that he did not believe the Prime Minister would address corruption, be transparent and start believing in meritocracy and political responsibility.

“His mask has fallen off… What he promised us before the election was bluff and deceit because the situation is the complete opposite,” he said.

Dr Busuttil also touched on the Identity Malta scandal about which the Opposition has been calling for an independent inquiry and the meeting of the Individual Investor Programme monitoring committee during which he requested but was denied details on those who acquired citizenship through the programme.
