The Opposition has asked the Auditor-General to broaden his investigation into the granting of a state guarantee to the investors building the new power station.

The government last week announced it had extended its state guarantee to €360 million from the previous €88 million.

The shadow minister for finance, Mario de Marco, the shadow minister for the economy, Claudio Grech, and the shadow minister for energy, Marthese Portelli wrote to the Auditor General and the president of the Public Accounts Committee noting the increase and asking for the original investigation they had requested to be broadened accordingly.

They said they were concerned by the guarantee, in that, for the first time, it had been granted to a private consortium.

The auditor confirmed he had already started the original investigation.
