The National Museum of Archaeology in Republic Street, Valletta, will be open for free this Sunday, Heritage Malta said.
The museum features artefacts from Malta’s Neolithic period up to the Phoenician Period. Apart from the earliest tools used by the prehistoric inhabitants and other artefacts which give an insight of people's daily lives, highlights in the museum include the Sleeping Lady from the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, the Venus of Malta from Ħaġar Qim, bronze daggers from Tarxien Temples, the Horus & Anubis pendant and anthropomorphic sarcophagus from the Phoenician period.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to view the recently inaugurated coins and medals collection, and the temporary exhibition which explains the exciting new information on Malta’s prehistory of the FRAGSUS project.
One can also appreciate ongoing conservation work at the impressive Gran Salon, with its richly painted walls and wooden beamed ceiling (picture).
Guided tours will be held at 11am and 2pm, each limited to 50 persons. The National Museum of Archaeology opens between 9am and 6pm, last admission at 5.30pm.
