An open day is being held today at the police general headquarters in Floriana marking the 196th anniversary of the force. It is open till 8 p.m.

The day included a display of old and serving vehicles used by the police, including a fire engine used by the Fire Brigade when this still formed part of the police force.

There are also cars used by all sections, motorbikes, jeeps and trucks. All these vehicles will eventually be used in a police vehicle museum, which is still in its early stages.

For the first time, a recently restored war shelter covering the footprint of the whole headquarters was opened to the public. The shelter still has a number of operating theatres.

Other exhitions are of the equipment used by the mobile squad, weapons and riot gear used by SAG and a dispay of officers’ crafts and collections.

The crime and police museums were also open and the Dog and Mounted Police sections held a number of displays in the CID yard.
