Opel is investigating a series of reported fires in its Zafira right-hand drive model, the latest happening in Cork, Ireland.

The 133 fires that have been reported are said to have started in the heating and ventilation system of a number of Opel Zafiras (the Zafira B model launched in 2005, not the current Zafira Tourer).

Thousands of Zafira cars were recalled in the UK after the fires.

Vauxhall Motors, an affiliated company of Opel, said only right-hand drive models, sold primarily in Britain, were affected, alongside smaller numbers in Malta, Ireland and Cyprus. Cars International, Opel representatives in Malta, said they were not aware of any such incidents in Malta.

Opel does not yet know the cause of the fires but Vauxhall said the necessary action would be taken. This could mean a recall of all Opel Zafira B models.

Following the fire in Cork, Opel said in a statement it was carrying out an investigation. “While the number of incidents is very low in proportion to the number of vehicles on the road, we take this issue very seriously and will take further action.”

The company asked concerned motorists noticing unusual signs and sounds from the heating and ventilation system to contact their Opel dealer and arrange an inspection. “This will be done at no cost,” the statement said.
