Health is central in the climate change issue, and principal determinants of health such as food, water and shelter can be significantly affected. Paradoxically, the health of countries which have least contributed to climate change will be affected most. This places a bigger responsibility on developed countries which, while being in a better position to address the problems which climate change poses, have an obligation towards developing countries worldwide.
To this end Europe is rolling up its sleeves and, as documented in the 20 20 by 2020 "Europe's climate change opportunity", is showing itself "ready to give global leadership to tackle climate change".
The European Council has set two key and ambitious targets to the European Community:
1) a reduction of at least 20 per cent in greenhouse gases (GHGs) by 2020;
2) a 20 per cent share of renewable energies - such as wind and solar energy - in EU energy consumption by 2020.
"The Europe of 2050 will look very different. Nowhere will this be more obvious than in the way we supply our energy needs, and the respect we show to the world around us. This is a vision which inspires many Europeans today." (20 20 by 2020)
