The Church of Our Lady of Victories was the first building to be erected in the new city of Valletta as a commemoration of the victory over the Turks. The foundation stone of Valletta was laid here in 1566 by Grand Master La Vallette.

The main entrance of the church is at a higher level than the street level.

It is reached by means of a flight of stairs on either side of a raised podium, both made of local hard stone and having baroque- designed wrought iron railings. The main façade is splayed at the corners and is highly ornate with moulded frames, cartouches, a large marble inscription enclosed in swags of drapery and an aedicule containing the bust of a Grand Master.

The original structure was designed by Laparelli da Cortona and Gerolamo Cassar. The structure was enlarged and remodelled in the 1690s and 1752 and designed by Romano Carapecchia or Andrea Belli.

Mepa scheduled the Church of Our Lady of Victories as a Grade 1 national monument as per Government Notice No. 276/08 in the Government Gazette dated March 28.
