A franka stone statue of St Paul was originally located on the façade of St Paul's Shipwreck Church, but in 1885 the statue was removed from a niche on the façade which was being remodelled and placed at one of the corners of Triq San Ġwann and Triq San Pawl.

Both the statue and the supporting column are of a high artistic quality. This statue was paid for by the Baron Giacomo de Robertis.

A statue of St John the Baptist which was also originally on the façade of St Paul's Church is located opposite.

Mepa scheduled the Statue of St Paul as a Grade 1 national monument as per Government Notice number 276/08 in the Government Gazette dated March 28.
