Malta is a great place to witness one of nature’s greatest events – bird migration – and BirdLife Malta has launched an exhibition which captures some of the marvellous creatures that pass over the island.

Called Snapshots From A Marathon Flight, the exhibition is on this week at the Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa.

The photos were taken by seven wildlife photographers: Ray Galea, Nicholas Galea, Aron Tanti, Nadja Tschovikov, Joe Sultana, Mark Sultana, and Matthew Borg Cardona.

The subjects of the 30 photos, all taken in Malta, vary from rare visitors like the Short-toed Eagle to more common birds like the European Bee-eater.

When wild birds migrate between their European breeding grounds and African wintering grounds, they pass over Malta, which is one of the three main flyways used by Europe’s migratory birds.

“We encourage people to visit the exhibition, which we hope showcases exceptional sights of migration: sights which we can all enjoy in our own countryside,” BirdLife Malta Campaigns Coordinator Geoffrey Saliba said.

The exhibition also features x-rays of shot protected birds recovered by BirdLife Malta.

The exhibition is open at the museum between 9 a.m. and 7.30 p.m. On Sunday it will be moved to Baystreet in St Julians and will be open between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. free of charge until April 15.
