One man died and seven were injured in clashes between Greek and Albanian fans in Greece on Saturday night following the World Cup qualifier game played between the two countries in Tirana, police said.

Albania stunned Euro 2004 winners Greece with two goals in the first 10 minutes and held on to win 2-1, sending their fans into a frenzy as they celebrated with fireworks.

On the island of Zakynthos, a Greek-American attacked three Albanians with a knife after the match was over, killing one and injuring two others, police said yesterday.

In Athens, four Albanians and one Greek were knifed in street fights and taken to hospital, police added.

A number of skirmishes, that flared up in the centre of the Greek capital on Saturday night, had to be broken up by police.

Albanians are the single largest immigrant group in Greece.
