It seems that the ongoing saga of below-par health and safety precautions at construction sites continues. On Saturday, scaffolding mounted in Dingli Street, Sliema could be seen balanced on two cement blocks and thin pieces of wooden sheets. To add insult to injury, it seems the cement blocks were also part of the whole balancing act because these were placed at the edge of the pavement. Where is the OHSA?

Filthy state

Reports in this column on the filthy state the Floriana park and ride site has been in recently seem to have had very little effect if any. The area is shabbier than ever and the potholes there are increasing to the point that cars have taken to parking outside the area to avoid them. Remedial action is long-overdue. Who will take the lead?

Concrete jungle

Tower cranes are dominating the St Julian’s skyline with at least 11 of them standing high over the buildings there. Is this an indication of the way we are headed?

Horsing around

Commuters were last week forced to risk life and limb at Mdina Gate after two horse carriages there blocked both the pedestrian crossing and the ramp to the playground. This was not only an inconvenience to those with pushchairs and wheelchairs but a danger to those who wanted to cross the road. Such practices needed to stop immediately before anyone gets hurt.

Shocking discovery

Parents who took their children to the paediatrics outpatients’ ward last week were shocked to find an insect trapping station amid toys, which serve to keep the children busy as they await their appointment. Children were picking up the trapping station, believing it to be a toy. Such a device contains poison to trap crawling insects. Those responsible should make sure such devices are not left running about, especially if children are likely to be anywhere near.
