The heading should really be ‘Free-for-all parking’, because that is exactly what is happening in the upper part of Merchants Street, Valletta. And if any “authority” dares to attribute this to the ongoing works at Castille Place, let it be known that Castille was never meant to be a parking area. A year ago, a government spokesman said parking in Merchants Street was “unacceptable” and action would be taken to stop it.

Road flooding

Residents of Triq it-Tiben, in Swieqi, are annoyed by the state of the road which floods every time it rains or water is used for some reason. There are numerous potholes all along the street, sometimes making it impossible for residents to even get in or out of cars. The local council says there are no available funds to tarmac this busy road, which was one of the very first to be developed.

Blatant disregard

The decision to turn a blue-badge parking spot into a public convenience left Attard residents appalled. The mobile toilets were deposited on the only blue-badge spot in Church and Tommaso Dingli streets. All other parking bays in the area, including one for the lotto receiver there, were left free for cars to use. How could the authorities, local or central, have allowed this?

In the dark

Until a few years ago, the arches of the Lazzaretto used to be lit up at night, creating a stunning effect. This gave a truly glorious appearance to the Marsamxett harbour. Can the relevant authorities ensure this starts happening again?

Garbage disposal

A vegetable vendor has turned a skip at Gżira gardens into his own dumping ground. When the skip is full to the brim, boxes and other waste are discarded next to the container and the result would invariably be a mountain of trash. Is it such a big job to trace the vendor and clearly show him the yellow card?

Filthy state

Residents of St Julian’s rightly complain about waking up every morning to filthy streets littered with garbage. Evidently, rubbish is, for some reason, accumulating during the night. Who will decide to take the necessary action? Should the residents hold their breath?
