The ‘eternal’ flames no longer burn night and day at the War Memorial in Floriana. It has been decided that they are only lit between 6pm and 6am. Is that the way we honour the heroes who fell in the wars?

Broken news

What’s happening at PBS? The first item on the main 8pm news bulletin on May 16 was the restoration of the Maċina, in Senglea. That was the day when three workers were injured, one seriously, in a roof collapse in Sliema? Has there been a change in the criteria used to gauge newsworthiness?

Long crossing

The traffic lights opposite St Cajetan church, in Ħamrun, need some adjusting. The red lights seem to remain on forever. Surely pedestrians do not need that much time to cross a road that is not overly wide, even if they are elderly people on the way to church.

Waste of energy…

The street lights along Ġlormu Cassar Avenue in Valletta are switched on at 6pm with still another two hours of daylight to go, wasting electricity.

… and lack of it

Now that the project to upgrade the Sliema Ferries has been completed, Transport Malta should ensure that the traffic lights installed there are actually connected, as pedestrians are finding it very difficult to cross. It is not only a nightmare to cross but also very dangerous, especially for parents and grandparents pushing strollers.

Rubbish galore

Residents in Spinola Road in St Julian’s have complained time and again about the rubbish collection service being offered by the local council. Mixed waste is only collected two days a week but residents of this road, mostly foreigners, are not respecting this schedule and are taking out their waste on days when the rubbish is not collected. Stray dogs and cats in the street obviously make a feast of it, leaving the street laden with garbage of all sorts. The council ought to ensure that rubbish, at least in this street, is collected on a daily basis especially since there is a hotel there, whose guests would not enjoy this unpleasant sight.

Right of way

Can someone explain why drivers in the right lane of this intersection in Ta’ Xbiex are instructed to ‘give way’ to cars coming from their left? To make matters worse, their view of the left lane is obstructed by bushes of lantanas in the centrestrip!

Traffic chaos

The traffic problem in Attard persists as Transport Malta officials are not being sent to the area any longer. Traffic heading to Valletta from Rabat and that coming from Żebbuġ meet at the Attard Farm Supplies intersection, with the obvious trail of traffic. TM officials ought to return to the area to control traffic because when this was being done, the traffic flowed better. Repeated appeals to this effect have, so far, fallen on deaf ears.

Malta public ‘rubbish’ library

Walking down towards the public library next to the Excelsior hotel in Floriana, one is faced with accumulated rubbish. Could the cleansing department ensure that this roadway is cleared of all the debris and at the same time install a number of street litter bins?

Dangerous ratio

There seems to be a dangerous ratio of people to cars in Paceville. A reader witnessed at least two people-vehicle clashes in a couple of weeks. In the first a tourist crossing the road was hit by a slow moving car and fell in the middle of the road. In the second case a tourist driving a K-plate car reversed onto a man crossing the road while wheeling a suitcase. He hit the car to signal his presence and broke the back window.

Floating eyesore

Viewers cannot believe that the local council has agreed to have a floating triangular advertising billboard erected in Spinola Bay. It is an eyesore, in a bay used by commercial and pleasure boats. No one living in the area was asked if it was okay for it to be moored there, and the line of restaurants now have their view obscured by it.
