No recreation

An open area in Ta’ Qali was turned into a ‘lake’ after a storm during the night a few days ago. One wonders whether this is normal in such circumstances or if it the result of bad workmanship. A recreational area is of no use if it is submerged. And winter has not even started yet.

In the way

Garbage-collection trucks – or Scammels, as they are often referred to – should ensure traffic flows freely when doing their collection rounds, especially at busy junctions. Sadly, most of the drivers adopt an arrogant, if not violent, attitude towards motorists who dare ask them to, please, stop at the side of the road. The result is jammed traffic and this is not a one-off occurrence. It happens regularly and is spread across the island. Local councils should treat the matter urgently. If not, the transport watchdog should step in and blacklist contractors who think they own the roads.

No change

A boundary wall at the Santa Maria Addolorata cemetery in Paola has been in a pitiful state for weeks on end. Apart from being an eyesore, someone could also easily get hurt. Calls for repairs at the cemetery have regularly been made and while the government promises change, this has yet to be seen.

Bulky packages

It seems Maltapost staff are unable to distinguish between a ‘bulky package’ and one that is no bigger than a small box of chocolates. Recently, a reader received a note from the postal company saying he had received a “bulky package” that he should collect from one of its branches. Upon doing so, however, it emerged the package was in no way “bulky” and could have easily been delivered by hand, as per standard practices. This is not the first time in recent months complaints were received by this newspaper about Maltapost service.

Action needed

Muddy water is often pumped onto the middle of the road near The Atrium in Mrieħel, turning the entire zone into a swamp. There have been cases where car owners were reprimanded for allowing too much water to run onto the road when washing their vehicles. A case of two weights, two measures?
