Despite Manoel Island having its own waste separation area, it seems that whoever is responsible for the upkeep of the place overlooked the fact that waste cannot be separated into different containers if there is only one bin available. Signs indicating the different streams have been put up, however there is no skip beneath them. What is the consumer supposed to do? Dump the rubbish on the ground below the sign?

In bulk

Local councils encourage people not to take outdoors unwanted items before they are informed when they will be picked up by bulky refuse collectors. Yet some residents continue to ignore such good advice. This was the case in Freres Street, Gżira, recently, where a number of items sat on the pavement for quite some time before they were collected. Better monitoring could remove such abuse, and heavy fines would go a step further.

Unsightly mess

The tarmac at Valletta bus terminus seems to have been laid out in a hurry, with uneven parts already in clumps. The place is what a commuter first sees as he or she arrives at the capital and first impressions are usually lasting impressions. It is an unsightly mess that is in no way worthy of a European Capital of Culture.

Jutting out

A wall erected between garages in Annibale Preca Street, Attard, juts out onto the street, with motorists having to drive on the wrong side of the road. As the street is poorly lit, the wall is barely visible at night and is an accident waiting to happen. One wonders whether all necessary permits were sought and issued. Can somebody from the local council have a look?
