Name tags

Whoever is tasked with naming streets should ensure the signs are either in Maltese or in English, not a mixture of both. A sign in Naxxar has the words ‘Triq San Matthew’ on it. It would have been understandable had it been a name that does not have a Maltese version, but in this case, it should clearly have been ‘Mattew’.

Wrong direction

It seems nobody has informed the transport authority the Malta Trade Fair is no longer held in Naxxar, having stopped about 11 years ago. A traffic sign in Mosta still directs those heading to the ‘Trade Fair’ to Naxxar. Transport Malta will probably point the finger at the local council, and vice versa.

Filthy state

A section of the original foundations of Valletta below Tritons Square has been left exposed so visitors can get a glimpse of the past. Great idea. What is not so great is that it has been turned into a garbage dump. The stench emanating from the area is unbearable. Valletta is still supposed to be a European Capital of Culture. If it is such in a bad state now, one can only wonder what will happen post-2018. So much for V18.

Rubbish capital

To continue with the case of Valletta, the litter problem there has yet to be addressed a good seven months after the self-congratulatory speeches when the city was declared a European Capital of Culture. Recently, a piece of foam was dumped in a corner near some rubbish bins a few steps from the Co-Cathedral. The foam was filthy, suggesting it had been there for some time. Why is it despite so many promises the situation would improve this year, nothing much has changed in recent months?
