The supposed oldest living person in Tokyo actually died 30 years ago but his family kept quiet, it emerged today.

Police visited the home of Sogen Kato after being asked by local authority officials updating their list of centenarians ahead of Respect for the Elderly Day in September.

Kato was born on July 22, 1899.

Welfare officials have tried to meet Kato since earlier this year, but family members repeatedly chased them away, saying he was well but did not want to see anyone.

They grew suspicious and police forced their way into the house.

The mummified body believed to be Kato was lying in bed, wearing underwear and pyjamas, covered with a blanket.
