The government is considering a scheme which would allow old people's homes in residential areas to add extra floors, Social Security Minister Michael Farrugia said in parliament today.

He said that it was important that such homes were financially viable and Malta did not lead to an explosion in fees. Adding an extra storey would enable these homes to add beds, and thus become more viable.

The minister was replying to questions in Parliament by Nationalist MP Censu Galea.

He said the conditions would be published by the Planning Authority with the concept being the same as that applied to hotels.

He also insisted that the government is committed to raising standards, both in the private and in the government-run old people's homes.
