I was reading with interest the supplement of the 75th anniversary of The Times, particularly the picture on page 75 regarding The Sunday Times dated December 23, 1984.

On that page there is an article entitled Gas And Oil Found Off Malta.

I cannot recall this event and I do not know how the article transpired as it continued on another page. Can someone enlighten me how this event ended up?

It is a well-known fact that Labour governments always embarked on oil exploration including the last Labour government under Alfred Sant which searched for oil/gas in Gozo.

This is contrary to Nationalist governments who seem adamant on offshore exploration which could be the lifeline of our economy.

There are oil finds in Libya and Sicily so I presume that somewhere in between and in our waters there should be an oil find. Libya is to embark on offshore exploration in the Gulf of Sirte.

So what are the intentions of our government in this regard?
