After many years of fanfare and hype, the project proposal for a yacht marina at Xemxija has just fizzled out under the pretence that the bay must be reserved for swimming purposes.

As can be easily seen by one and all (see photo), the bay is crowded with moorings and craft of all shapes and sizes. Swimmers are conspicuous by their absence and with good reason. The inner end of the bay is engulfed with floating seaweed and other flotsam, especially when a northeasterly wind is blowing, not to mention the frequent overflow of drainage accompanied by a stinking smell. Xemxija Bay has long ceased to be a swimmer's choice.

I remember decades ago when there was even a direct bus from Rabat to take would-be swimmers to that bay. This route has long been terminated for lack of patrons. Besides the various craft at sea, over the recent past years the bay has accommodated the huge fishing pens that dominate the place.

If a yacht marina is no good for swimmers, how is it that all these craft and other mega structures are of no hindrance? Anyway, most of the yachts would be out at sea in summer and only come in during inclement weather.

The government has invested heavily to beautify the area, especially the promenade. A yacht marina would help the government to capitalise on investments made. Malta cannot waste such opportunities to attract foreign capital. Or are there other interests at play?
