A 44-year-old construction worker from Birzebbuga died late this morning in a fall from the fifth floor of the Skyparks construction site near the airport.

The Occupational Health and Safety Authority said that a mobile crane was being used to lift metal sheets onto a balcony on the fifth floor, when the worker fell and lost his life.

The worker, a father of three, was apparently hit by a pallet and fell to the street below.

OHSA said in a statement that without entering into the merits of this accident, all works, including one-off jobs, had to be the subject of a risk assessment with the aim of identifying all the risks pertaining to that particular job.

Duty holders had to ensure that the indicated control measures, including the required safe systems of work, are the subject of careful planning and are implemented in full and at all times during the execution of the works.
