Again due to overbooking, the FOI has decided to repeat its nine-session evening training course on "Safety Representatives" next month.

The sessions will be held on March 6, 11, 13, 18, 20, 25 and 27 and April 1 and 3 (Tuesdays and Thursdays) between 4 and 6 p.m. at METCO, San Gwann.

Objective: The modules are designed to assist those nominated by senior and middle management to understand their role and responsibilities as safety representatives. By the end of the training course participants should understand the need, in particular:

¤ to work pro-actively to prevent workers from being exposed to occupational hazards in the workplace;

¤ to co-ordinate, on behalf of the management, how to identify and control hazards;

¤ to be well informed about the various hazards that may exist in their workplace and the possible solutions for controlling these hazards; and

¤ that employees are not to interfere with or misuse anything provided for purposes of health and safety, and that work items are to be used correctly.

Trainers: The course trainers are Ing. Raymond Spiteri MBA (Brunel), DMS (Henley), B.Sc. Mech. Eng. (Hons), MAS-RAE Eur. Ing., and Emanuel Said, B.Pharm., MBA (Henley).

Ing. Spiteri is a partner with TUV Austria, a leading accredited certification body for testing and inspection, including risk assessments and notification in Europe, and are accredited as a Notified Body by the Malta Standards Authority.

He is also a part-time lecturer with Grenoble Graduate Business School, the University of Malta and the Malta Institute of Management. Ing Spiteri has often represented the FOI, both locally and overseas, on issues relating to health and safety.

Mr Said is a consultant in marketing, market research and aspects of occupational health and safety in relation to chemical and biological agents. He has conducted research work relating to the implementation of the acquis communautaire in a number of industries, including food and beverage, catering, chemicals, printing and furniture.
