Sliema Wanderers remained in the race for a place in this season’s Championship Pool after they edged traditional rivals Floriana 1-0 at the Hibs Stadium.

Obinna Obiefule came off the bench to convert a last-gasp penalty that handed the Wanderers three precious points. The Blues had been awarded the penalty after Sliema debutant Etienne Barbara was upended in the area by Brian Said a minute from time.

It was a merited victory for the Wanderers who had created the better chances throughout the 90 minutes with Barbara, Obiefule and Chakhib Lachkim a constant threat for the Greens.

With this victory, Sliema Wanderers remained in eighth place on 19 points, just one point behind sixth-placed Qormi and Hamrun Spartans. The Blues must beat Hibernians and hope Qormi and Hamrun Spartans lose their respective matches to take the last place in the Championship Pool.
