U.S President Barack Obama tonight announced that the White House will not release a photo of Osama bin Laden's body.

President Obama made the remarks during an interview with CBS television's "60 Minutes."

The White House had been weighing up the release of a picture, in part to offer proof that bin Laden was killed during a raid on his compound early on Monday.

However, officials had cautioned that the photo was gruesome and could be inflammatory.

US forces stormed the compound in Pakistan where bin Laden was hiding, then shot and killed the al Qaida leader.
