A weekend of rain did not deter a group of 15 young sailors, aged between seven and 10, from figuring in a Malta Young Sailors Club Open Day at St Paul’s Bay.

Following a summer course for beginners on Optimists, the novice sailors were tried and tested in a series of fun races, organised by Club Commodore André Borg and national coach Jean Paul Fleri Soler, together with the participation of other experienced MYSC sailors.

MYSC has an excellent record of champions on both national and international levels, including Benji Borg and Sebastian Ripard who are currently training and aiming to qualify for the 49er Class competition at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Certificates were distributed to those who participated and prizes were also awarded to the winners of the fun races. Nick Bonello Ghio topped the list ahead of George Mamo, Tom Zammit Tabona and Seb Darmanin Kissaun.

The event was sponsored by Atlas Insurance. This year, the MYSC marked its 10th anniversary of summer sailing courses.
