It is not just to have a booming economy while thousands lag behind without enjoying any of the wealth created, the Alliance Against Poverty said.

However, the alliance said it was encouraged that the discussion on the minimum wage incorporated the need for a basic minimum income for a decent life.

The alliance said it noted with satisfaction that poverty has been put on the political agenda, thanks to the work of Caritas.

AAK noted with satisfaction that the government is committing itself that benefits to disabled persons who are not in a position to work will be raised to the level of the minimum wage. Still, it said there are others, such as pensioners and people living on social benefits, whose income does not guarantee them a decent living.

The alliance reiterated that the social accommodation provided by the state is not enough and that the price of private social housing market is causing further difficulties for families already in financial difficulties into poverty if not pushing them into destitution.

"Alliance Against Poverty appeals that the issue of poverty is not juggled by politicians for political partisan gains and that everybody’s motivation should be that no one fall behind by eradicating poverty ones more."
