The article ‘Why had Mabel Strickland switched support to PN?’ (The Sunday Times of Malta, November 25) sent me through a nostalgic journey to the day Mabel Strickland employed me as her night editor at the Times of Malta.

Miss Strickland was aware of my political inclinations; she knew of my contributions to the then Bulletin, where I always wrote against her party, Herbert Ganado’s party and Toni Pellegrini’s party. She never insisted on loyalty to her party, but loyalty to the Times of Malta.

In fact, Allied Newspapers had quite a lot of Labour supporters who worked happily in Mabel’s paper. Miss Strickland was an excellent employer and this point needs to be emphasised.

When I phoned up Miss Strickland when the Times of Malta was in flames, she asked me: “Is anyone hurt?” I answered: “No”. She then said “Good night”.
