A Northern Ireland fan in France to cheer his team on during Euro 2016 died early this morning after falling from a promenade onto a rocky beach.

Darren Rodgers, 24, was on his own when he fell from a height of 8 metres in Nice at around 2pm. Police are treating the fall as an accident.

Nice's promenade, known as the Promenade des Anglais, is a popular spot with tourists, strollers and skaters. Thousands of fans had gathered in the area yesterday as Northern Ireland faced Poland in Euro 2016.

Irish FA chief executive Patrick Nelson said "on behalf of the board, management, players and staff of the Irish Football Association, I would like to express my deep sadness at the tragic death of a Northern Ireland supporter."
