A worker on a Norwegian drilling rig in the North Sea has died after the platform was hit by a huge wave.

Oil and gas company Statoil said a "heavy wave" smashed into the COSL Innovator rig, injuring three people and damaging the rig's accommodation module.

The injured were airlifted to land by Norwegian rescuers but one of them died later.

Statoil said it was assisting in the "evacuation of the rig down to the safety crew. Evacuees are being flown ashore".

The platform had been taken off a well in the Troll oil and gas field because of the rough weather.
