The police are investigating an alleged case of corrupt practice in the run-up to the election, while another two allegations were investigated and dismissed, Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia said in Parliament.

He was replying to questions by Nationalist MP Beppe Fenech Adami on whether the police had received reports of corrupt practices between May 1 and the end of June.

He did not explain what the allegations were.

Replying to other questions by Dr Fenech Adami, the minister said the police are not investigating any allegations of 'vote buying' in the last general election.

He also said the police had not received any reports of false sworn statements as part of the electoral process.

The Nationalist Party has said it is 'building a picture' of potential abuses in the run-up to the election, including the granting of 'favours,' a spike of promotions and employment with the government, and a situation where even university students had declared themselves to be illiterate so that they could be 'assisted' in voting.
