Jurors in the murder trial of bank messenger Alphonse Ferriggi are expected to start their deliberations tomorrow after the prosecution and the defence today concluded their submissions.

Joseph Zammit, 52, stands charged with murdering Mr Ferriggi outside the BOV branch in San Gwann in September 2000. He is also accused of theft, stealing a car and damaging the bank's property.

Defence lawyer Jose Herrera submitted that the defence was not contesting that the hold-up was carried out, or that the accused might be found guilty of complicity in the theft, but there was no shred of evidence to suggest a common design between the perpetrators to commit the murder. Nor was there any evidence that the accused had actually killed Mr Ferriggi.

There was nothing which went against his version of the facts.

Prosecutor Aaron Bugeja insisted that the accused did not need to have been the one who pulled the trigger to be found guilty of the murder of Mr Ferriggi and theft.

Witnesses' testimony and what Mr Zammit himself told the police showed that he was part of the crime.

The trial is being presided by Mr Justice Joseph Galea, Debono.
