GWU Secretary-General Tony Zarb said today that no satisfactory proposal had so far been made to Air Malta workers who will be asked whether to opt for early retirement.
Speaking at the annual general meeting of the union's transport section, Mr Zarb said no satisfactory proposal had been made to the workers about the Voluntary Retirement Scheme and the Early Retirement Scheme.
What had been offered was 'far' from what the prime minister had said would be given to the workers, Mr Zarb said.
The workers, he said, could only decide whether to stay on or opt for the schemes if they knew the conditions of work and the possibility of alternative employment and the schemes had to be attractive.
Mr Zarb urged the workers to remain united as more talks are held with the management.
ARRIVA TALKS
Turning to Arriva, Mr Zarb said the union would not tolerate more than one split shift per week after this Thursday. He said talks with the company on this issue were ongoing.
Mr Zarb called for better facilities for the drivers at termini and said the GWU had reached agreement with foreign trade unions so that when it felt that foreign drivers should return to their home countries, their unions would ask them to do so.
