In his reply to my letter, Stephen Zerafa, the WSC's head of public relations (June 23) chose to side-step the issue and failed to explain or justify the delay of 32 hours in repairing a burst water pipe.

Instead he hid behind a banal eulogy of WSC: "Our working methods and systems are often studied and copied by foreign water companies". Surely Mr Zerafa is not referring to the colossal delays in repairing a burst water pipe. A similar incident some three years ago was on parallel dimensions of efficiency.

"Does this mean that Joe Public will never see a leak in the street again?" Of course not! But Joe Public expects repairs to be done as expediently as humanly possible. Joe Public likes to know why a 10-minute patch-up job required an "emergency" crew to turn up 32 hours late; why our "world renowned, highly copied enterprise" charges such hefty bills if it is the leading venture in the saving of such a vital commodity. As this "was just a minor failure of a small-bore pipe" as he claims, should we label the WSC "incompetent and malfunctioning"?

Finally, as Joe Public and myself still have not had a satisfactory reply, I'll ask this gentleman again: Why did it take the emergency repair team 32 hours to turn up and stop thousands of precious litres of drinking water from going to waste?
